Carbon Dioxide emissions from SnOasis

SnOasis will create an unacceptable level of carbon dioxide emissions, which are extremely harmful through the creation of global warming.

The recent “Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change” published on 30th October 2006 said in his report” There is still time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, if we take strong action now. The scientific evidence is now overwhelming: climate change is a serious global threat, and it demands an urgent global response.”

The carbon dioxide emissions which could result from the SnOasis proposals and associated traffic will be significant and are unacceptable for such a development which is neither required for the well being of local people nor for strategic reasons. It is an entirely frivolous reason to further damage the environment when real glaciers and ski slopes are quickly melting.

Whilst the figures are imprecise at this stage as detailed figures for the power consumption for the site is not finalised, SnOasis site and its visitors are likely to generate at least 34,000 tons of CO2 per annum. These figures do not take account of the proposed related housing and railway station.

The carbons sink from the proposed 40 acre woodland mitigation area only sink about 10% of these emissions after 20-30 years of growth when the net carbon deficit released into the atmosphere from this development to increase global warming is estimated to be at least 30,000 tonnes annually.

To put this into context, this is the equivalent of 5,000 households (an average household in the UK produces 6 Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide per year.
